MOTORSHIP PILAROS
SARONIC GULF
The motorship Pilaros was constructed in 1954 in GDYNIA. On the 15th of September in 1976 the ship departed from Dubrovnik Croatia carrying a cargo of timber with a final destination of Tarsus in Syria. The ship reached the port of Piraeus on the 17th of September 1976 in order to re-supply. Soon after it embarked on its destination at about 20.30 on the same day. Leaving the port soon after the ship trying to avoid collision with another ship turned suddenly to its starboard side which caused inclination making it unstable and the crew unable to balance the ship. The crew worried of the ship capsizing jumped into the sea and were later rescued by private boats and the coast guard. The captain Christoforos Toumazatos had already broadcasted the distress signal. After approximately one and a half to two hours the ship sank.
The wreck of the motor ship Pylaros is located on a sandy bottom off the coast of Faliro with a maximum depth of 52meters and a minimum depth of 35 meters. It is an impressive dive as the 59 meter long vessel offers divers lots to see. The whole ship is intact and in good condition considering the amount of years it has been sunk although parts of it is covered in fishing nets. The ships external helm is clearly visible including its impressive masts which stand in place to this day. The video below is from our most recent dive on the 26th of September 2021. We first dived the wreck in April of 2018.
