CARGO SHIP

CORNEL

A ship constructed in 1938 with a Gross Tonage of 327, two main holds and a crane. The engine was constructed later in 1944 and fitted to the ship in 1955. The ship was constructed by E. J. Smit & Zoon in Westbrook of Holland and was named Cornel for the Rose Shipping company of England. It was renamed in 1965 as Glenside and finally Elenitsa in 1974. The name Cornel is written on the ships bell which was found during the first dive at the wreck. The ship sank in September of 1983 approximately 2.5 nautical miles from Fleves island whilst its crew of six were rescued by two fishing boats. It is sitting upright at a depth of 85 meters with two large holds situated in the front of the ship and its mast which is still in place as so are the anchors. The dive was particularly challenging due to the very poor visibility conditions at this depth as it happens with many shipwrecks found in the sandy bottom of the Saronic Gulf.
