We are excited and proud to be presenting the Greek Mines expedition at TekDiveUSA. The event will take place as soon as it is deemed safe by all parties involved with the COVID situation. TEKDiveUSA is a biennial advanced and technical diving conference comprising three elements; an exhibition, a conference and a gala awards dinner. Exciting talks and useful workshops will cover many aspects of advanced and technical diving including cave diving, wreck diving, diving physiology, mine diving, underwater photography & videography, rebreathers, and technical training and safety protocols.

In May 2019, a group of cavers visited the famous silver mines of Lavrion, in the South-East Region of Attica (Greece). The main objective of this visit was to inspect and document the flooded chambers. And the journey of underwater exploration began….

In collaboration with cave divers Erikos Kranidiotis and Stelios Stamatakis, field archaeologist Mary Fotiadi along with mine researcher Vasilis Stergiou and friends who supported the divers to transport the equipment, an exploratory dive took place and the first video footage of a flooded mine in Greece was filmed. After this initiative, the team visited an additional five different mines and conducted further exploration and filming of the flooded galleries. The inflow of the water coming from the aquifer covered many of the arcades and completely sealed the deeper levels, making the mine a time capsule. At their debut, the exploration team will present the first rare images of a historical mine. The mines of Lavrion are an important archaeological site and a valid part of the Industrial heritage of Greece. These mines funded the construction program of Acropolis and supported the Greek Economy during the 19th and 20th century. We are more than happy to participate at TekDiveUSA and share incredible photos, rare underwater footage and insight details of the mission.
