KASTALIA

OROPOS

Little is known about the shipwreck of Kastalia which is sitiated in Attica at Kalamos near Oropos area. It is a water carrier and the sister ship of Stymphalia which has sank at Alepochori. The ship is situated between 10 and 24 meters depth with the stern being at shallower waters whilst the bow at the deepest part. Locating the wreck is particularly difficult due to the sediment and merky waters creating very poor visibility conditions. The ship was at ancor when due to bad maintenance and presumably bad weather it turned upside down and sank. In fact it has sank upside down and the divers are able to penetrate inside the wreck although caution is needed due to the sediment.

The divers had an estimated location of the wreck, a point from the shore was given to them by Mr. Kostas Kouvaris whom the team wishes to thank for the information. From this point at shore the wreck was suppose to be approximately fifty meters distance in the sea. It took the divers over half an hour with their scooters to locate the wreck as visibility was terrible. Descending to 20 meters depth at some parts visibility was no more than two meters. After following a course underwater the divers spoted several chains on the seabed which they followed and one of these led them to the wreck.
