GREEK MINES EXPLORATION
2019-2020
Lavrio has been a center of attraction for mining activities since the ancient times. The geologic activity between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates formed the Attica-Cyclades Geological Arc, essentially making Lavrio a mineral-rich area. The ore veins were already visible superficially from the Neolithic Age. The first organized inhabitants of Attica extracted natural copper from the galleries of Thorikos to manufacture tools. Mining activity intensified from 3000 BC and reached its peak in the 5th and 4th century BC in the time of the Athenian Republic, making Lavrio and its surrounding area an industrial center of antiquity. After centuries of neglect, the mines were reopened in the 19th century, industrial activity supported the Greek state economy and the Lavrio Mining Companies were the industrial superpowers of this era until almost the late 20th century.
The inflow of water from the aquifer was a frequent problem during the mining process. This problem was addressed by pumping out the water. Where it was impossible to continue mining, the galleries were abandoned or sealed. Upon completion of the work, the inflow of water flooded the lower levels, making them inaccessible. The water prevented visitors from accessing these lower levels, protecting this section of the mine from vandalism.
The discovery of such a flooded arcade and the need for further exploration led the Addicted2H2O diving team and Cave Divers Erikos Kranidiotis and Stelios Stamatakis to explore these galleries further. From July 2019 to December of 2020, exploratory dives have been carried out in several sections of the mines at Plaka and Agios Konstantinos sites, capturing video footage of these underwater galleries for the first time.
Underwater exploration of these arcades give us a different dimension to the way we now view the Lavrio mines, providing us with a unique insight of the galleries from their last day of operation. A completely different dimension is also given to the various types of underwater exploration projects taking place in Greece. Adding the Greek Mines to the domestic and international dive forum communities.
During the course of this project we met quite a few people along the way. People with different backgrounds who all worked together towards a common goal which was non other than to discover what is hidden underwater in these mines. Offering their help voluntarily and in most cases operating under difficult and tiring conditions. We would like to thank every single one including those people from the press who were interested to share our story. We feel humbled and honored by the support we received from everyone.
DOCUMENTARY
THE BOOK
The book was published in November of 2020 after the successful completion of the first phase of the mine exploration at Lavrio which began in 2019. It will accompany the film documentary to be released in 2021 and comprises of stories from each of the ten mines the team explored, including historical information on each site and images from the expedition.
We are excited and proud to be presenting the Greek Mines expedition at TekDiveUSA. TEKDiveUSA is a biennial advanced and technical diving conference comprising three elements; an exhibition, a conference and a gala awards dinner. Exciting talks and useful workshops will cover many aspects of advanced and technical diving including cave diving, wreck diving, diving physiology, mine diving, underwater photography & videography, rebreathers, and technical training and safety protocols.
