NESTOS MINESWEEPER
On the 30th of March in 2019 we dived the Minesweeper Nestos at Psathopirgos near Patra. The Nestos minesweeper is immersed in an upright position at a depth of 24 to 48 meters with its bow being at the deepest point. It is located in a seabed full of sediment with a steep downward inclination. Visiting the ship and starting from her stern, the diver will encounter the holds, cleats with the ropes, the bridge, the large steam boiler and finally the helm of the ship.
Sank on 23 April 1941 by the German Air Force, Nestos was one of the four mining ships that were bought by Ioannis Metaxas’ government in 1938 (the remaining three were Strymon, Axios, Aliakmon) all four ships were modified fishing vessels. Nestos was built at the Selby Shipyard in November 1925 on behalf of Pickering & Haldane with the original name Lord Bradbury.
