SS PETALLI

ex. Admiral Cohran

The Greek Cargo Steam Ship PETALLI (ex. Admiral Cohran) was built in the William Doxford & Sons Dockyads in Pallion of Sunderland England. She was launched on the 19 of May in 1917 and works were completed in September of the same year. The ship made her maiden voyage as Admiral Cohrane for the Byron Steamship Co. Ltd of the Eppirikos brothers based in London. In 1928 the ship changed hands to Mari Empirikos based in Andros.

The ship has a length of 128 meters and a width of 16,5 meters and for propulsion used a three-cylinder reciprocating steam engine producing 572 NHP. The ship was commandeered in November of 1940 by the Greek authorities in South Africa at the outbreak of the Greek Italian war. On the 6 of April in 1941 during the declaration of war by Germany on Greece the ship was docked at the port of Piraeus. During the attack of the port by the German Luftwaffe and the subsequent explosion of the Clan Fraser the ship Petalli caught fire. Following this she was towed outside the port where she sank. The shipwreck was identified as Petalli in 2010 by the wreckdiving team.

The wreck is situated at a depth of 75 meters and the stern to bow axis is in a western direction. The ship has been badly damaged and in some places deformed whilst some sections of the deck and superstructure have collapsed. In the mid-ship area, the bridge and crew quarters are visible. Part of the Engine room towards the rear of the ship is accessible although not many items remain, mainly faucets and pipes. The ship offers an excellent tri-mix dive, and the entire vessel is covered in benthic organisms and is full of sea life. The biggest challenge is that it is situated close to the busy shipping lanes of Piraeus port and therefore meticulous planning and care should be made.
