The Well

Situated in the second bay of Vouliagmeni underwater is a well. A hole 5 x 6 meters at 11 meters depth. At the end of the well at approximately 29 meters there are protective railings that prevent divers from entering the underwater cave. The well is located in the middle of the bay. It starts right where the rocks end and the sandy bottom starts. Its location is sometimes marked by a buoy tied with rope to the seabed as free divers use this spot to practice their skills. The sea current is usually weak and the diver copes with its intensity without much effort, however, it strengthens considerably near the entrance of the cave.

During September of 1978 a tragic incident occurred after three American officers went missing after a dive at the well. Several attempts were made to locate the  divers in the cave but to no avail. It was not until 1989 when members of the SPELEO cave diving group during exploration dives to map the cave and determine its course, located the remains of two bodies. The first at 50 meters from the entrance whilst the second at approximately 70. In 1990 followed another tragic incident with the loss of life of another diver Panagiotis Tzortzatos who was retrieved by his team during the same day. It was not until 2006 when efforts began by the Hellenic Navy Seal members Kostas Lazanas, Thanasis Liosis, and Makis Themelis succesfully retrieved the remains of two of the American divers who had tragically perished in 1978. They were presented a commemorative plaque by the American Embassy of Athens in recognition of their brave efforts to recover the bodies.

In September of 2018 the Grafas Diving team along with the two members of the Addicted2h2o team decided to explore this difficult cave. Erikos Kranidiotis on the 5th of October 2018 contacted Andy Judd a member of CDG in the UK who along with fellow diver Mike Thomas and a couple of Greek divers had dived this cave in 2007. The purpose of this communication was to gain a better understanding of the difficulty of this endeavor and the challenges that lied ahead. To quote Andy’s words “The one in the sea has a horrible flow… that narrows to something I wouldn’t go down… we had to use jammers to get out…We used proper rope and jammers as you have. We staged lots of other bottles and edges very sharp…”. Andy was kind enough to share exerts of the CDG 167 April 2008 report they completed after the dives at this cave which can be found below.

Our team was involved on six visits with the Grafas Diving Team. On the 16th, the 22nd, the 23rd of September 2018. On the 27th and 28th of October 2018 and finally on the 12th of May in 2019.

Diving at a cave with a reverse flow could only be achieved by initially deploying ropes prior to our penetration to the further part. We would then be assisted by climbing brakes to exit. Our initial visits on the 16th, the 22nd, and 23rd of September aimed at clearing the entrance from any debris, securing the rope outside the cave entrance, and slowly but surely deploying the rope gradually inside the cave. On the 27th of October was the day Antonis Grafas, Lefteris Koutalas, and Erikos Kranidiotis penetrated the farthest into the cave. Erikos reached the “steps” and mid way as the steps sloped downwards he signaled the other two divers and stopped at this point. Antonis and Lefteris continued pushing further into the cave to reach the narrow opening at approximately 120 meters. Almost forty minutes since entering the cave, Erikos exited the cave first and a few minutes after that Antonis and Lefteris followed and successfully exited the cave.

First mapping by V.Vroutsis and D.Kobiliris 1989-1990, SPELEO.

An extended map can be found at the Grafas Diving site, please see link below. This was an extremely difficult dive, one none of the members wish to repeat, and strictly not recommended for anyone to attempt. We will only ever revisit this cave from viewing our video footage and images we captured during our dives. A tough dive pushing ones psychological and physical barriers to the absolute limit.
