Tiros Sea Cave
Arcadian Village
This cave is situated at the Arcadian Village in the Peloponnese, between Astros and Leonidio. In fact there are several caves in the wider area also referred to as the caves of Tiros. The most commonly known are the Arcadian Village cave, Tiros sea cave, Katelanos, Krioneri, and Platoma. A common characteristic of all these caves is that they are either situated right next to the sea or in very close proximity. Little is known about the cave although it is reported via the internet these had been first explored several years ago. Not forgetting of course some of these sea caves in this area were explored by Mr. Alexis Papadopoulos back in the 90s.
The cave can either be accessed by sea or by land, hauling the gear down a slippery slope until the divers reach the cave entrance which is clearly visible from above. We chose the second option and preferred this to the alternative which would have been to use our scooters to reach the cave from the closest beach, approximately half a kilometer away. Other than being careful on the rocks when transporting the gear, it is not a difficult access point and the divers can quickly reach the water.
The entrance is situated at a depth of 5 meters. We entered the first chamber which is very large and we fully explored it following a North-East direction of its right wall. The maximum depth of this first section reaches 35 meters. We reached the opening leading to the second section of the cave, we secured our cave line to the line already placed by previous dives and entered. The scenery drastically changes and here we found many stalactites and stalagmites. Unlike the Arcadian Village cave (situated a few hundred meters in land) or any other fresh water caves we have visited, these are now covered by sand and other material as they are being exposed solely to the ellements of the sea. This second room reaches a depth of 42 meters and at this point facing North is a narrow passage leading further into the cave. We reached a depth of 45 meters after passing through this narrow restriction and we estimate the deepest point in the cave reaching approximately 50 meters.
