UNKNOWN JOURNEY

2021-2022

After the successful completion of the first exploration project “Lavrio Mines Underwater” (2019 – 2020), the production of a documentary and publishing a book, the team embark on a mission to explore underwater the mine of Sklives revealing its hidden secrets. Follow the team in their quest to discover what lies hidden deep underwater for almost half a century since these works were abandoned and the sections flooded. During the first exploration of ten mines in the Lavreotiki area information reached the team from the few remaining ex workers at the mine regarding an abandoned engine and various other equipment which were left when this flooded and ultimately sealed forever. Subsequent research conducted in the archives of the Lavrion Technological & Cultural Park and available bibliography provided scarce information to the team. The mission had three primary goals, locate the missing engine, map the underwater passages, and locate the Well of Sklives. The Well is one of the eleven most historic and preserved mining wells constructed in the entire Lavreotiki area. According to the engineering plans obtained from the archives the Well of Sklives reaches a depth of two hundred and two meters from the surface. Access from the surface is now impossible, thus all exploration must be done carrying equipment for over one kilometer via the dry tunnels of the adjacent Mine 80 followed by underwater exploration. Access to the dive site is extremely difficult making the entire mission a challenging endeavor. The team filmed their progress and in 2022 in partnership with 8Film completed the production of a documentary to be screened at several film festivals around the globe.
